Iceland Day 11 - Lagarfljót, Hengifoss, Breiðdalsvík, Djúpivogur and Höfn

Today was a nice lazy day with not too much driving.

We started off by going to Lagarfljót, which was a lake close by to Egilsstaðir where we had stayed the previous night.  Apparently this lake has a sea monster, according to creditable sources like the sign in our hotel room that I posted in my previous post and Wikipedia.  We drive around and tried to keep a look out, but no sea monster.  Deeply disappointed but I guess not too surprised, we then headed to our next stop.  Here are photos from either side of the river, sea monster not included.

Litlanesfoss and Hengifoss are two waterfalls, the former is lower and the latter is higher.  They were both skinny and fairly tall waterfalls.  I liked the rock formations around them which are formed by  lava flow that formed columns as it cooled, creating vertical columns.  The walk each way to Hengifoss, which is higher, was just shy of 1.4 miles, about 2.25km each way.  The round trip took us a little over an hour.  Here is Litlanefoss on the left, and Hengifoss on the right.

We visited Breiðdalsvík next, thinking there would be waterfalls.  Didn't find any, probably looking in the wrong place, and did not take any pictures.

Next stop was Djúpivogur to see these bird egg sculptures.  There are 34 of them in total representing the 34 birds found in the area, with one being exceptionally large for the official bird of the city.

En route to our hotel, we found this black stone beach area and stopped for a quick picture.  Turned out to be not so quick, since the pebbles were hard to walk in.  It was freezing and the wind was blowing really strongly.  Brr.  The backdrop of that was the rising mountains of Vatnajökull.

Lastly to Höfn.  We were to spend the night at Fosshótel Vatnajökull.  The rooms were very stylish!  We have a view of 3 glaciers from our room!  (You have to look really hard in the background.)  We dropped our bags off, and then headed to dinner.

I requested a quick stop at the airport, since the Höfn airport was used as the Greenland airport in the Secret Life of Walter Mitty.  Here it is.  Throughout the Iceland trip, I have been thinking about the way Walter Mitty tries to pronounce the name of the volcano that is to erupt, and that's exactly how I feel like when I try to say an Icelandic name.

Dinner was at Humarhöfnin, which means lobster harbour.  Apparently Ben Stiller and Sean Penn ate here while the movie was being filmed!!!  We chose it because Hog likes lobster (so do I!) and it was the #1 rated restaurant in Höfn according to Tripadvisor.  It was a nice looking restaurant.  I ordered a brandade which was pretty good, Hog got a lobster soup which I thought had an interesting taste (and she added salt and pepper to it), and we shared a mix of whole langoustine and tails, which was good.  For dessert we got a Skyr Bisquit, which was whipped cream and vanillaskyr on crunchy chocolate biscuit.  We were a bit confused as to what Skyr was, but after being explained to us I realised it was the yoghurt they sell at the supermarket.  Too late, we had ordered it, and at ~US$10 it was just kind of expensive.  That was pretty normal tasting.  I could have made it for $1.50 ($1 for yoghurt and $0.50 for a partial pack of biscuits).  Oh well.  Overall a pretty good meal except for the normal dessert, but super pricey.

Here is the menu and they also teach you how to eat langoustine on the placemat.

Breakfast is provided tomorrow at the hotel and I am really excited!!
