A Few Short but Precious Days in Perth, WA, Australia

I have a dear friend that I have known since secondary school.  She moved away when we were 13 or 14, and I had seen her on and off in Singapore thereafter.  After college, I missed her wedding due to work conflicts, and I am honestly not sure when the last time I saw her was.  But I had an opportunity to visit her on one of my trips back to Asia in March, and I grabbed that chance, and boy am I glad to have.  There are just a handful of friends a girl has where, even after not seeing each other for years, they are able to pick up where they left off.  There are just a handful of friends a girl has where you can sit for hours and not say anything and it's not weird at all.  Here are my comings and goings during my short but sweet reunion with my friend.

She lived in a lovely suburb of Perth called Alfred Cove.  Amazing how much space there was out there.  Big back yard, swimming pool, yet she lamented the lack of space.  I guess big city dwellers and suburban folk have different notions of space.

I managed to get a few morning runs and beautiful sunrises.  I made it as far as Applecross, which is supposed to be a really expensive suburb, and there were some lovely houses along the water.

Did one touristy thing, which was the Fremantle prison.  We got to go into the belly of the system, learn about how the Perth settlement started, climb up ladders, row a boat, all kinds of cool stuff.  No pictures allowed, but here is a photo of a little snack we had at the cafe there.

We got the opportunity to eat out a little.  We went to a place that another one of my friends had recommended called Bread in Common in closeby Fremantle.  It obviously had good bread.  We got a bread platter (which you have to pay for, that irked me a little), pork belly (very yummy) and lamb ribs (I'm not a big lamb person but it was not bad).  I really liked the vibe of the place, very hip, in an industrial setting, with cool hanging lamps.

We went to San Churro in Fremantle, which is a chain, and had a churro platter, not bad, but I think we over ordered and I felt bad so I overate.  Fun place to be.

One day we went to the mall, and had a simple lunch salad at Miss Maud, but topped it off with princess cake.  I think a healthy meal was much needed and it hit the spot.  And then the cake.  Lol.

One of the evenings, she got a babysitter to take care of her most adorable little daughter, and we tried to go out to a food festival, I think the Eat Drink Perth festival.  We tried to eat there, but the lines to get to the lines (yes, you read that right) were so obscenely long and us being the old farts we were decided to find a more quiet location to eat instead.  We did find this large inflated Asian waving cat, so I took the photo for posterity.

So off we went to Darlings Supper Club.  The name kind of threw me off, since they served Asian cuisine.  But I really enjoyed the food, surprisingly, even though the place had a really ang moh vibe.  Did not taste or look too healthy, but sure was yummy!

I think my last meal there was at this place called the Left Bank in Fremantle.  A favourite of my friend's, the restaurant is situated next to the river and had lovely patio seating.

One last beautiful place that we stopped at on our drive home - beach!

Last but not least, I got treated to a performance by the little girl, who was a gummy bear!  Some of the kids were annoying, but I think she was just darling.

I will miss you, old friend.  Till we meet again next time.
